Wafaa Bilal is one of the most popular and richest Artist who was born on June 10, 1966 in Najaf, Najaf Governorate, Iraq. Wafaa Bilal (Arabic wafaa bll (Arabic: wf ba:l Born June 10 in 1966) is an Iraqi American artist, a former professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is currently as an assistant professor in the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. The most well-known of his works is his project, Domestic Tension, a performance in which the artist stayed in a gallery for one month, and was killed by paintballs from a remote location by Internet users viewing the event via a webcam. Also, he is known in his autobiography, Shoot an Iraqi: The Art, life and Resistance under the Gun, inspired by that performance, which reveals the horrible experiences that come with living in a war zone and being a child under the Saddam Hussein regime.
In May 2007 Bilal began a project lasting 30 days named Domestic Tension to protest his opposition to the Iraq War. In the course of the installation, Bilal confined himself to one room in the FlatFile Galleries, located in Chicago. While the artist was in a small space to a small space, he was able to be viewed 24 hours a day with the camera he linked to Internet. Alongside his camera Bilal installed a remote controlled paintball gun which users could hit him any moment. The gun fired an unpleasant yellow color and released an audio that was as loud as semi-automatic guns each time it fired.
Bilal’s The 3rd I project was exhibited in the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Qatar on December 30, 2010. Bilal had a titanium plate implanted in the back of his head, to which a camera was attached. The website also showed his location via GPS. Bilal said that he wanted to capture the mundane while not knowingly taking the pictures. In an attempt to assuage privacy concerns, Bilal’s university required him to cover the camera while on campus. On February 4, 2011, Bilal had the camera removed due to constant pain.
Wafaa was asked to participate in a net art piece called Dog or Iraqi while an artist in residence at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He let his audience decide which one – a dog named “Buddy,” or an Iraqi, himself – will be waterboarded at an “undisclosed location” in upstate New York. He was the one who got water-boarded.
For instance, his film Raze 213 had viewers smell an animal carcass that was rotting in acid. It was shut down by New Mexico health authorities. It was an ode to a torture method that was used to torture prisoners by Saddam Hussein of dripping nitric acid on prisoners randomly. In 1991, following his refusal to join the war in Kuwait and forming opposition groups, Bilal fled Iraq and stayed in refugee camps in Saudi Arabia for two years in which he taught children about art. On March 6, the day after Wafaa’s lecture, the RPI administration said they would not allow the exhibit to be supported on campus, and has since declined to reopen it. The decision came after the College Republicans called the Arts department “a safe haven for terrorists” on their blog. The statement has since been retracted. The Institute has been subsequently criticized by advocates of free speech and artistic freedom.

One day, Bilal learned that his people were being killed by soldiers who were not even stationed in Iraq—they had the power to shoot missiles “from an armchair in front of a computer somewhere, as if it were all some kind of video game.” Frightened by how easily soldiers (and Americans) could distance themselves from the terrors of war, Bilal used Domestic Tension as a way to constantly remind himself of the horrors going on in Iraq.
